Martin Rollins Talks About
His Work on KET

Rollins’ work focuses on urban and suburban street and park scenes from around Louisville, where he lives and works. The various drawings featured in this profile illustrate his interest in buildings and architecture as subject matter, his use of light and shadow, and his focus on the transient nature of life. Rollins talks about the challenges and advantages of his chosen medium, oil pastels. The temperamental pastels, having a texture somewhere between a crayon and a tube of lipstick, offer intense pigments and, according to Rollins, help to vividly reveal a sense of honesty in the composition. Rollins also discusses his own creative process, giving viewers a peek into his sketchbook.

"This, That, and the Other"
at the Jewish Community Center in Louisville

Artworks by Martin Rollins
October 11 - November 17, 2015
Opening Reception on October 11, 2015
2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

In an essay by Bryan Warren accompanying the exhibition: "This, That and the Other, as Martin Rollins describes it, is a retrospective, of sorts. The exhibition is not the usual chronological series of works showcasing the thematic or formal development of an artist. Instead, these drawings and paintings are Rollins’ personal selections of still-life explorations
in form, history and artistic reflection he has dabbled with over time.

Also, this exhibit is not the light-filled urban scenes and verdant glowing landscapes many of us are accustomed to seeing in Martin Rollins artwork. Instead, they are tightly-spaced still-lifes, some loosely executed, others finely finished. They range from the early 1980s to
today. These are works that he has not often shared or exhibited with the public."

The JCC Patio Gallery, located in the lobby of the Jewish Community Center, is the elegant setting for imaginative exhibits featuring the innovative artwork of locally, nationally and internationally recognized artists.
